This washed coffee from Rwanda comes from the Nyamasheke district in the southwest of the country, south of Lake Kivu. It is grown there by small farmers, who in this case have organized themselves as a cooperative and run the washing station Vunga for processing. The Vunga cooperative, which is run by a woman, has been in existence since 2009. While the quantities of coffee produced here are small, the cooperative has made a name for itself in recent years for producing very high quality coffee. 

With the support of our trading partner Raw Material Coffee, the farmers receive health insurance through the cooperative and achieve higher prices for their coffee. Additional investments are being made in expanding the infrastructure to include more smallholders.

Our roasting profile brings out the best in the coffee and Vunga is ideal for filter or low-acidic single origin espresso.

The result in the cup is an elegant, smooth and well-balanced coffee with a mild sweetness, the taste of peach and creamy milk chocolate.
